It was a typically sunny Southern California September Saturday in 1988. We were at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to watch UCLA's second game of the season, against powerhouse Nebraska. We were with friends Bill and Pam Hicks. Bill, then a car dealer in Ventura, where I was editor, had played basketball for John Wooden at UCLA in the 1960s and had stayed in touch with his former coach.
