Blackwell will face Jayton in a Class 1A, Division II regional playoff at 6 p.m. Friday at Trent's Gorilla Stadium. Blackwell will be considered the visiting team. Blackwell (11-0), the District 6-1A, D-II winner, defeated Sierra Blanca 72-24 Thursday in Garden City in its bi-district playoff. Jayton (7-3), the 7-1A, D-II runnerup, beat Throckmorton 60-6 in bi-district. Blackwell is 11-0 for the second straight year, equalling its best start in school history, and can break that record with a win over Jayton. Sweetwater High School's varsity basketball teams will host Lubbock Trinity Christian today at Mustang Gym. Sweetwater's girls (1-7) will tip off at about 6:15 p.m. and the boys, playing their season opener, will get started around 7:30 p.m. The sub-varsity action begins at 5 p.m. for the girls and boys. A late-evening start for Blackwell's football team in Thursday's bi-district playoff game against Sierra Blanca and a few first-half defensive struggles proved no problem, as the Hornets pulled away in the second half to defeat the Vaqueros, 72-24, for their 11th consecutive win this season without a defeat. Blackwell now faces Jayton, which beat Throckmorton 60-6 in its playoff on Thursday. Further details will be announced later. Blackwell made it two rounds into the Class 1A, D-II playoffs a year ago after it ended the regular season with a 10-0 record. This year, the Hornets enter the playoffs 10-0 again, and they plan a much longer postseason run this time around. For most of Tuesday's 2018 home opener, the Sweetwater girls basketball team was able to counter every Abilene Cooper rally with one of its own — right up to the final one. Sweetwater's last lead fell victim to a late 9-0 rally as Cooper left with a 43-38 win over the Lady Mustangs, who let a 36-34 advantage slip away in the last 3:27 to fall to 0-4.
