Construction will start next spring on apartment-style housing for West Virginia public school teachers in McDowell County. Reconnecting McDowell says the public-private group's board has approved a plan of the $7 million Welch building that will have two floors of apartments and two floors of commercial space. The building is intended to make housing more accessible for teachers. County School Superintendent Nelson Spencer says there are 22 vacant teaching positions in the county. A Virginia state board tasked with developing plans for a cancer research and treatment center is set to convene for the first time. The Henrietta Lacks Commission is named for Henrietta Lacks, a Virginia woman whose cells were taken without her consent and widely used in groundbreaking research. It will meet Wednesday in South Boston. Gov. Ralph Northam signed legislation earlier this year creating the board, which will work on plans for the research and treatment center in Halifax County, where Lacks was from.
