Officials in a western Arkansas city say residents can finally kick off their Sunday shoes. Fort Smith city directors recently repealed a 1953 ordinance that essentially outlawed public dancing on Sundays. Locals who knew about it called it the "Footloose" ordinance, nicknamed for the 1984 movie starring Kevin Bacon about a town that banned dancing and rock music. Visitors to the historical museum in Fort Chaffee will soon get to witness history straight from the pockets of former servicemen. Museum personnel and researchers at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith are working to preserve contents in more than 20 wallets discovered in the barracks at Fort Chaffee from the 1950s and late 1940s. Along with military IDs, each wallet contains personal effects such as photos and other forms of identification, the Southwest Times Record reported. Fort Smith departments will have to be frugal next year, administrative officials anticipate. The city's departments can expect a tight city-wide budget in 2019, city finance director Jennifer Walker said Friday during a special study session.
